I remember so many times when meeting someone new and asking what kind of music they listen to, they would reply, "Anything but country", or "Only Top 40". Well, not really the second one, but the point is how people would take a genre and completely neg it from their playlists and attention. As we continue moving forward with time, music is constantly changing. In today's world, there in almost no way to avoid hearing Electronic Dance Music, and in most cases it's received with flying colors from the listeners, or at least without complaints.

I began noticing this right a couple months after my introduction to the rave scene. Sure going to parties on the weekends influences my musical listening base, but it also made me more keen on picking out when I'm listening to EDM. The first time I realized how much the media bombards the general public with EDM was in early January while watching TV and a commercial came on for a movie called Red Tails. This movie recounts the story of the Tuskegee Airmen back during WWII. As I was watching the commercial, something threw me for a loop. I quickly realized that I was way too excited for this movie, I was actually kind of dancing to it. It's because the song was one I danced to often at parties, Knife Party's Remix of Porter Robinson's track, Unison.

Now you can't turn on the radio without hearing influences of EDM in every genre. Listening to pop music? Pay attention for the short dubstep breakdowns. Rap? Try Trap. And now you can add country to that list as well. DJ/Producer Dee Jay Silver released an album called Country Club, featuring artists like Carrie Underwood and Love and Theft combined with EDM twists. The result? People dancing more to country music. 

As we continue to accept EDM into our daily lives, we also find as mass of sub-genres. This is only proof that the music is evolving, and is here to stay for a while. I truly believe that in 100 years from now, producers of today will be the legendary musicians of that time. Until my prediction comes to light, enjoy some out of this world beats!

Well maybe you just remember DP there, or maybe you don't, but all answers were revealed today, by Vogue! Yup, it kinda is a music video. Essential Music Festival Packing List: Camp Bisco 12

Summer has officially started, and with that the music festival tours are heating up!! Here at EGP we have toured around to different festivals over the years, learning what to expect and how to 'survive' for the weekend in the rough. So we are here today to help share our knowledge on what to pack up to ensure you are comfortable, happy, and enjoying the festival to the fullest extent.

Firstly, do yourself a favor and check the website of whatever festival you are planning on going to. The next thing to keep in mind is that the following camping list is aimed at those who are looking for the essentials, aka the short list. Being that the next festival we are covering will be Camp Bisco 12, this list will include essential tips specifically for this year's Camp Bisco at Indian Lookout Country Club.

DON'T FORGET! Click around the festival's main website for very specific information for this or any event. No one will tell you the rules and what's happening there better than the event coordinators. The folks at MCP are pros, so heed their words of advice and their rules.

1. Bring your TICKET.

Sounds almost silly right? You bought your ticket and it came in the mail, don't forget it at home! It can cause an unnecessary headache for you. There are way too many times we've heard of someone forgetting their tickets at home. That's just...forgetful. It does happen though, so to help you prove you bought that ticket and sort out the damage...

2. Bring your WALLET.

Really, there are only three things you will potentially need in there. Your ID, cash, and a debit/credit card for more money if you have one. There will be bars there with booze, and they will ID you. How much money you want to bring is up to you.  We can't make you any promises of the people you connect with, but don't be surprised to trade your own beers or food for that dope collectible pin or wrap. Money is needed though, so make sure to have some.

3. Bring something to SLEEP IN.

No, not sleep in past day break, sleep inside of. We're talking a tent, or maybe a hammock. Think about how many people are staying in your tent. It's always fun to have a slumber party with your buddies, or maybe you prefer to have a small establishment of tents. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes sense. Not every festy will have a spot to sleep dangling in the hammock. Don't forget a blanket (or more than one, some places get cold at night), a pillow, and tarps in case of rain. Some festivals allow for car camping as well, but it usually costs extra!! For Camp Bisco 12 there are still tickets left for that, but they are limited. Get car camping tickets HERE.

4. Bring CLOTHING.

Or just some. For Bisco we'll be in New York... so no public lewdness AKA nudity (read the law speak HERE). Being that it's summer and very hot, you'll want t-shirts and shorts. At least one shirt and underwear per day, and a pair of shorts for daytime and a pair of pants and a sweatshirt for night. For shoes, an old pair of sneakers or sandals with backs work wonders, and absolutely a pair of galoshes. Basically, anything you don't mind getting dirty. If you bring your nice shoes, they will get ruined. There is lots of dirt, which turns into mud if it rains. Also, bring a hat to protect yourself from the sun and keep you a little cooler. Bring a bandanna or two as well. Any of the above can be bought at the festival, but you will pay for it, sometimes a lot more than the store.

5. Bring FOOD.

Don't go crazy. A small cooler of fruit, granola bars, maybe some canned food too. Make sure anything that can melt or go bad stays in the cooler! You can bring a grill if you wanted to. You can bring a small single burner propane grill, or a larger Coleman griddle, but keep in mind keeping the grill clean, gas, wooden spatula/spoon, space for packing, keeping food fresh...it's a hassle. They sell food on premise, but it will sometimes run on the expensive side. Correlate money and food brought with your fellow camping friends to figure out how to keep your bellies full.

6. WATER.

Either factory sealed bottles or an empty container to carry. They have water stations throughout the festival where you can refill your bottle. Feeling sketched out by public water flows? Get a bottle with a filter. Do that, save money, and stay thirsty my friends!

7. ALL THAT EXTRA SH*T.
Here's some other stuff you should bring.

- Toiletries: tooth brush, tooth paste, towel, toilet paper, soap, small shampoo.
There are porta-potties and even public showers available (both inside and out). Expect lines when the music is pumping and everybody is awake.

- FLASHLIGHT
It's really dark at night.

- Trash bags
KEEP YOUR AREA CLEAN DURING AND AFTER THE FESTIVAL. You are an adult, clean up after yourself.

- Folding chair/blanket
It's nice to take a seat in front of a stage or by your campsite.

- Sun screen
Protect against cancer and burns!!

- Bug spray
Protect against pests!!

- Travel cart
If you packed all this, and everything else we didn't tell you to bring, it might be a good idea to make sure you have a cart to carry all that. You will be making long trips from parking to camping.

- Small extras: small knife, extra rope, rain jacket, sunglasses, skill toys (gloves, poi, hula hoop, etc), pen/paper, art supplies, music gear, first aid kit, lighter, ear plugs, camera, zip lock bags, small lock.
These things will help you out and are small enough to not take up too much space. As far as keeping your possessions safe (ie: cell phone, credit card, camera, etc) it's your responsibility. Lock your possessions, keep electronics in plastic bags, and keep your stuff safe.

***Most importantly above all things, BRING YOURSELF.

YOU are special in your own ways.
YOU will connect with like minded people and people that find you interesting.
YOU love having fun and getting along with people.

Open your mind a little bit. Listen to music you wouldn't normally. Check out all the vendors and the different workshops, get involved with clean up and other fun stuff like Color War. Say hi to everyone. Ask if you don't know. Being at a festival is like being part of a community that is super energetic and constantly moving. Participate with everyone and you will be rewarded a hundred times over.

Festival Overview - Counter Point Music Festival

Even though there's so many awesome festivals going on and that we're covering, one that really catches our eyes is one we hope to make our next big adventure, Counterpoint Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. This seems to be the last big festival of the summer, with camping and a stellar lineup it may be your last opportunity to experience the magical power of a strong music festival in 2012. Located only 20 minutes outside of Atlanta on 8000 acres of woods along the Chattahoochee River, it's a first time festy brought to you with a big name backing it, MCP Present. Counterpoint features a lineup that's stocked with names you knew, names you know, and names you want to know.

They released their day by day schedule and it has definitely gotten me excited. Thursday starts it off strong with such up and comers as Adventure Club and Run DMT with festival favorites Beats Antique and Big Gigantic headlining. With headliners Bassnectar, M83, and Aviici, and performances from such amazing acts as Atmosphere, Feed Me, Crystal Castles and Excision with over a dozen other acts.

Then Saturday closes big with headliner after headliner. Skrillex, Laidback Luke, Zeds Dead, Lotus, and Pretty Lights, who's label Pretty Lights Music is getting special attention with almost there entire roster having a slot on Saturday. Festival Dreams and Nightmares: Gnarnia 2012

Wassup everyone? It's Wish[Paus3] here and I'm hunkering down in NYC while Zodd and Fitz are making their way out the Michigan for StereoTerra! Ever since preparing for Camp Bisco, I have had my ear to the festival community becoming a little more fine tuned. One event that caught my eye instantly was a Facebook page that popped up in my news feed called "Destroy Gnarnia the Festival" (EDIT 8/17 It seems the page has been taken down). I started looking into the page, why would someone create something like this without reason. Well the reason was pretty shocking. According to posts on the page, there had been 490 arrests, most of the felony charges, in and around the festival. Holy cow right?! I had to look in deeper. What I've been finding is more disturbing than the initial shock and question of, "who's to blame". The differences between posts there and on the official event invite are vast...

Let me start by saying the festival looked awesome. It was a first for the folks behind it, this was Gnarnia's inaugural year. All the pictures and video that came out, the lineup, the grounds... everything looks so legit. The website provides everything for you, from camping guidelines, to ride sharing, to a ton of activities they were holding. There's no doubt that people would be wanting to come out to this one, this was no underground festy. The problems began when there were more people than expected, and of course the increased amount of police presence in the area.

Fact is, police are in every event whether you know it or not. Breaking the law in any way WILL put you in a position to get caught by law enforcement. Being at a festival is not an excuse to do illegal things, but that is a personal decision. At Gnarnia, it seemed that the police were a little, hyper-active if you will. DT's trying really hard to set people up, harassing and arresting people next to tents that weren't theirs, being violent, randomly searching persons, hippie profiling, and all-in-all using terror tactics to get what they wanted. This is what stands out as the most significant issue here. Not the problems the producers had with tickets or camping, or even having the cops in the festival grounds.

According to one trusted festival goer, the majority of arrests happened outside the festival at road blocks and at hotels and cabins. Apparently the festival grounds were not connected to the camping fields, one had to take a shuttle to get back and forth.... too many people decided they should drive their own cars. They had also told me about the sale of alcohol on festival grounds. As normal as that seems, North Carolina has a department for that, called the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). This allowed them to be on festival grounds whenever they wanted, in other words, more law enforcement around. So you had several different police departments doing "their own thing".

Getting back to the Facebook pages. The "Destroy" page has been garnering a lot of attention, but in my opinion is negatively affecting the community. People are angry their friends got in trouble, as anyone would be. Everyone is looking for someone to blame, which is literally pulling people apart. If anything everyone should get together and figure out a way to change legislation. I personally have been blocked from posting on the page after posting my rant to the page owner (I apologize for my French!). It sickens me that people are seeming more ok with seeing a police state in action than they are with a first time festival having first time festival issues. On top of that, people like myself, who are looking for answers and momentum and not just suggestions of conspiracy within the ranks of the promoters, are being silenced. The owner of the page won't even release his/her name to the public, but they will sit behind their desk and do nothing but instigate. When asked for pictures, I was replied to that I should post them, and people were "too scared" by the police to actually pull a camera out and film. If you don't exercise your rights, they will be stripped away from you. It's all smoke and mirrors to me, tactics to get people riled up, but there is no clear cause. On top of that, the page is censored (as certain posts have been on the event page as well). To me, it means make up your own mind. It's obvious that there are gaps in this story, but once again the over all lesson seems clear to me. This is a motion towards a police state. Ya'll didn't like it? Guess what, stop blaming everyone else but yourselves.

As a community, we are strong. There are hundreds of thousands of us, all with similar goals. We just want to have a good time at these events, but what do we stand for? The problem is that everyone is too comfortable. Festivals become marketing tools and we forever are stamped as a drug culture. If you are for the path of open communication and change, share this article. Don't let a bad experience shy you into a corner, instead make a stand. I hope that those wrongfully arrested and were harassed get their justice (if those stories posted are true).

LAST RANT:

The grounds were held on Beech Mountain, NC. Seemingly the middle of no where (it is), this town is only lively during the winter time when skiing and snowboard season open up. To have a mass amount of people in their town is both a great and terrible thing. As people, we don't like seeing things we are not used to coming into our comfort zone, but business loves it. Something else to think about here is the lower rate of crime in this type of area. Seeing a "neo-hippie" music festival coming into town, well that's an instant mark for law enforcement. I have never been involved with organizing something like this, but take Camp Bisco for example. Last year 25,000 people came through to Mariaville, NY. It caused so many issues with traffic, the locals, and it almost seemed like the festival might have to find another home. But it didn't. The problems caused the year before were handled in a new way this year, and Bisco was in it's 11th year.Now I do not know the way money gets thrown around for both private security and/or police, but it seemed like MCP was working directly with the police to insure the traffic moved and people that weren't supposed to be there were not there.

So, The Polish Ambassador has returned with more news of a future filled with space aged beats. His new album "Superpowers" (which is being released FREE on his website on August 1st) is a marked departure from his last release, Homeboys in Outerspace 2. Sounding more similar in tone to his more recent Explosions in the Sky and Bon Iver remixes, this new EP has six originals that seem to suggest the Ambassador is trying to increase the population of his listeners in more ways than one. This is straight baby-making music with a beat. Equally befitting  night stargazing on an empty beach or a trek home from whatever strange planets your adventures have brought you. You can check out the albums first single "Earth Crush" on his soundcloud now, and while you're there you should catch up with all his music. If you haven't been following The Polish Ambassador already, do a little homework 'cause this mans music is definitely out of this world.

You can catch The Polish Ambassador live on tour. He appearing this Sunday, July 29th at Catalpa on Randalls Island, New York, and at Gnarnia in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. The Polish Ambassador's live performance is something you have to see to believe. Imagine a non-stop flow of every type of song, regardless of genre or generation, that makes it impossible to stand still. I frequently refer to his last NY appearance in March with Stephan Jacobs and Alpha Data as minute-for-minute the best show I had ever seen in NY, and I am looking forward to as much time with the Ambassador as I'm allowed.

Interview: Camp Bisco 11 2012

As the summer time approaches, there is more and more talk of Camp Bisco (July 12-14). I've spoken to so many people that are going for their first times to Bisco this year, and for many, it will be their first festival ever. This year is going to be bigger than any year before, and I was able to get a closer look into what's in store for Bisco now and moving forward! Festival Coordinator Brett Keber of MCP Presents answered some questions I had about Camp Bisco:

[Paus3] Was Camp Bisco created with the intention of being the huge music festival it is today, when it was first started back in 1999?

[Brett Keber] I think the goal of anyone's life or project should be growth. If you always aim to be better than you were the day before incredible things can happen. Camp Bisco, 11 years later, is a perfect example of that. 

[P] How is this year going to be different from previous Camps?

[BK] We are upping the ante with all aspects of the event. Our site infrastructure, stage production, art installations, level of talent and our production skills are all being raised to the next level. We are also shifting a few things around to make the experience more enjoyable for all attendees, including adding an extra entrance to the event and different camping options all with the goal of increased safety and faster entry into the festival.  Overall this will be the best Camp Bisco yet, which we say and hold true to each year.

[P] There are hundreds of performing artists throughout the weekend, but is all the entertainment music? What are some events that take place outside of dancing?

[BK] First and foremost, our yearly "Color Wars" have become a staple of Camp Bisco and something that many patrons look forward to year in and year out. Shpongle is bring his "Masquerade Party" Production to the festival, for which we plan on getting as many participants as possible dressed up in masquerade costumes to incorporate some themed elements through out the site. In addition, CB11 will have numerous art displays for the patrons to enjoy, live painting and a few more surprises up our sleeves. 

[P] How many stages are set up and how are they different from each other?

[BK] There are 2 side by side main stages, which allows us to transition between artists seamlessly and keep the music going all day and night. Then the two dance tents, one will have some of the best production in the country and the other equipped with stereo sound throughout the tent providing completely different experiences between the two. We do our best to match the music to fit the environment to provide an overall world class experience for every type of music and music fan.

[P] With all the cars and amount of people coming in it seems like you would get to meet a lot of new friends. 

[BK] That is one of the greatest things about Camp Bisco! Camping and dancing next to strangers has a funny way of forming long lasting friendships in one weekend. We have heard stories about groups of friends and even marriages that started at Camp. This element is one of the most fun components of the event.

[P] We've seen artists such as Snoop Dogg and Wiz Kalifa at previous Camps. Can we look forward to other "obscure" electronic sets?

[BK] Obscure is a word we hold as a badge of honor. We do our best to book talent that isn't being booked everywhere else, and that not everyone is listening to. We try to stay ahead of the curve, and if you look back at our past lineups you will see names that were there years ago that are just blowing up now. Bassnectar at Camp 6 is a perfect example. He was barely known at the time and played our "Local Stage" in front of about 700 people. Porter Robinson played our Silent Disco last year and look at him now. I can say this, if you see a name on our lineup that you don't know... you should check them out. They are there for a reason! 

[P] There were rumors of the band breaking up. If this did happen, would there still be a Camp Bisco?

[BK] Rumors and opinions are everywhere and neither carry much weight.  None of us plan on stopping this upward path of success.

[P] Are there any potential surprises in store for the festival goers?

[BK] You will just have to come and see.

Camp Bisco...It's Coming

I got some info and I'm passing it to you!! Camp Bisco is coming closer and closer (JULY 12-14, 2012) and MCP Presents has just released the lineup in an announcement last week!!

Earlier this month the website was updated, allowing visitors to explore a little more into Bisco There is now a news section, a photo gallery, travel and festival info, and a FAQ as well. And that's just the website.

The lineup has been released! It's thick of talent from around the world, including the Disco Biscuits, Skrillex, Bassnectar, Shpongle....it's going to be a sick festival! I personally was hoping to get some of swag on with Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, but they have not been confirmed accorded to the lineup listed on the latest press release (below). I'm hoping that more names get added to the list, and you already read about our very own local DJs getting spots there as well. I'm talking about Nick Nise, Jake Dukes, Sprite, and Mad Panda!

Camp Bisco 11 will once again be held at the picturesque Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York. Weekend Review, and a Colorful One

Last weekend was a different kind of weekend, and refreshingly so. First on Friday night unexpectedly at The Festival of Color: NYC Holi and then Saturday at Raver's Fantasy. Both nights were lived up to their names and pulled through really awesome parties.

Friday came around and I was going to decide were to head for the night, and when I got the message about Holi I got really excited. You see, in order to promote this party, there was a video used from actual the actual Indian festival. People are having an awesome time...I kinda fell in love. Check it out:

So I went in there to a new warehouse very close to The Cage and recognized only a few faces. There were so many different kinds of people. Some coming in large groups, some with parents (and grandparents), it was quite awesome to see how many different people came in. Among the few faces that I did recognize included Morgan Freeman (Bluecrash) and he was working on the visuals for the place. The faces that I didn't recognize were covered in the colored powder everyone was throwing around. It was awesome to see everyone partying together.

 

 

The music was different from the raves I've been writing about. You had a DJ playing beats from vinyl, a live trance musician known as The Cosmal Show (with a live painter), a live jam band, and a nice lineup of DJs. People were digging it for the most part, the party kept getting more and more populated as the night continued. I had to put the camera down because it was getting too rowdy, but this was a horrible environment for a camera without protective gear. The party kept raging on throughout the night and from all the smiling faces and positive feedback on the event, I'd say this was yet another very successful one for Helen Pyre and Morgan!

 

Saturday night was an event at one of my favorite venues, Raver's Fantasy at Amazura Lounge. This was an Audiophiles' event, and DJ Bizarre's biggest one. I got to this one bright and early to watch the venue get ready for the show. For this event, there was some pretty cool stuff involved including an amazing lineup including straight from the UK, DJ Sc@r and Pikey!

 

The crowd slowly came in throughout the night, and the excitement continued to build. People kept coming in filling in the Amazura's space nicely.  It was so great to see everyone come out, it was also awesome seeing another gloving tourney go down. Electrik Graffiti hosts these competitions, and this time it was held in the gloving tent. Inside the tent a glover could go in to practice with a mirror, learn something new from more experienced glovers, and during the competition had the opportunity to win a brand new glove set. There were a surprising number of new glovers, some that had bought their gloves that day. In the end, Bagelz took the title for the night, with some fierce competition following in the top four.

 

 

 

The party went off without a hitch. Everybody was vibing well with each everybody, dancing, giving light shows, and a few cuddle puddles. The night was amazing and a great way to end my going out for the weekend. Big ups to all the promoters, producers, and the amazing people that help make everything happen in the scene.

According the invite so far, over 3,000 people said they were coming through, and a little birdie told me presales were NUTS. There's going to be a huge crowd at this one so it's good they have an even larger venue.





The lineup is so insane! Original Brooklyn and NYCR are bringing in some major headliners from around the world! In the mix you have: Lisa Lashes, Isaac, Dieselboi, Drop the Lime, Dj Irene, Soulslinger, Urban Assault, Hellfire Machina, Charles Feelgood, X-Dream... all part of 39 Djs that will be spinning over the course of the night. That's right! between single and tag team sets, there will be close to 40 Djs making you move your feet here.

The production crews are also making sure that you are entertained no matter what! They are bringing in a video game truck, a UV lit moon bounce, fresh fruit, massage tables, food vendors, clothing and gloving vendors (Electrik Graffiti!), fetish performances and gogo dancing by NYCR Eyecandy, and even a Naughty Lingerie Competition with a cash prize!

Dancing to the Beats! GreenMonkeyNYC's Jungle Bungle!!

It is so awesome to see fresh party throwers rising up! You have the already known and established organizations like NYCR and Caffeine producing these amazingly huge events... and then you have the "little guy" working tirelessly to basically compete with what the other is offering. In this case you had an amazing party, with many great vibes, an awesome addition done in a new way, all with being the first production by this team ever! Lets start with the Lab. It's a great spot! Power Ravers proved that to me back in December when the Megazord was put up. I mean, even before that when I watched Sam's (EpicLink) slide show video of Tight Crew's Super Mario Party 3 (!!), the decorations made for this place have been pretty epic! For Jungle Bungle the decor was sick with tiki men, roots and leaves strewn across the ceiling, cut and painted cloth, faux plants all over, and awesome lights bouncing all over! That was all thanks to the set up crew of Kevin Sarcastic, Sue Sarcastic, Sid Sprouts, Tara Tiger, and Michelle with Tomato at point! Place looked awesome, and even more so with the GreenMonkeyGogo girls! They were all decked out with the jungle look, Tara actually sported the craziest mask I've ever seen! It was her shaman headpiece that was the skull of what looked like a Cubone (pokemon [duh]) or something! It was great seeing people get into the mood of the theme!

The music was kicking ass all night, from sexy drum and bass tracks, to dubstep, to some moombahton, the bass was always kicking! I thoroughly enjoyed Jake Dukes and W@x's set together, that brought me back to a couple months ago when you always saw them spinning together. Even people that have never heard them before were telling me how much they loved it. For most of the hour set, Jake was sporting a scoodie made by Electrik Graffiti, which brings us to the "awesome addition in a new way"...

...The Electrik Graffiti vendor table. I'm not a rave veteran, I've only seen so many within the past few months, but this was totally new. They had three tables set up under a white tent. Around the sides opposite the table they put up awesome backdrops, included one that had UV reactive paint on it. The whole place was glowing, which was quite appropriate with their wares... party toys (glove sets, glow sticks, light balls, LED pacifiers), and custom-furry-hand-made scoodies! Their scoodies are so warm and soft, and so many people were wearing them! The also served as a relaxation spot where people got light shows, massages, and just sat and chilled for a second. Electrik Graffiti will be around for more events, be sure to stop by and say hi!

The vibes were overall positive throughout the night. People were dancing, getting light shows going over to Pixel for UV body painting, or climbing over the beloved Kevin Carpet to grab a smoke or some fresh air outside. I actually hung out around Kevin for a little bit to see how people were reacting with him. Some people walked, scuttled, shuffled or danced across him, while a handful of people jumped over him. I even heard someone deny that there was anyone actually rolled up inside. He's one hell of a good carpet! Whether upstairs or downstairs, it felt great to be around so many smiling faces.

One thing that was a little disappointing was a fellow glover and [OWL] lost her glove that night. She was so upset about it. While there were many people on the hunt for the glove, it never turned up. Until pictures were released the next day and the photographer Teaz actually snapped a shot of the glove on the ground and a young lady bending over to pick it up. Anyone would hate to loose their stuff, so if you know this person, let's all reach out and find out if she has the glove, and to return it to it's rightful owner. If anyone was seen Yoyo glove, you know how talented she is, and she really misses her glove. A large portion of the gloving community is reaching out to help the glove find it's way back to Yoyo.
