Times Are A Changin'

We Are Not In This Bubble Alone reviler.org

I remember so many times when meeting someone new and asking what kind of music they listen to, they would reply, "Anything but country", or "Only Top 40". Well, not really the second one, but the point is how people would take a genre and completely neg it from their playlists and attention. As we continue moving forward with time, music is constantly changing. In today's world, there in almost no way to avoid hearing Electronic Dance Music, and in most cases it's received with flying colors from the listeners, or at least without complaints.

I began noticing this right a couple months after my introduction to the rave scene. Sure going to parties on the weekends influences my musical listening base, but it also made me more keen on picking out when I'm listening to EDM. The first time I realized how much the media bombards the general public with EDM was in early January while watching TV and a commercial came on for a movie called Red Tails. This movie recounts the story of the Tuskegee Airmen back during WWII. As I was watching the commercial, something threw me for a loop. I quickly realized that I was way too excited for this movie, I was actually kind of dancing to it. It's because the song was one I danced to often at parties, Knife Party's Remix of Porter Robinson's track, Unison.
Now you can't turn on the radio without hearing influences of EDM in every genre. Listening to pop music? Pay attention for the short dubstep breakdowns. Rap? Try Trap. And now you can add country to that list as well. DJ/Producer Dee Jay Silver released an album called Country Club, featuring artists like Carrie Underwood and Love and Theft combined with EDM twists. The result? People dancing more to country music.
As we continue to accept EDM into our daily lives, we also find as mass of sub-genres. This is only proof that the music is evolving, and is here to stay for a while. I truly believe that in 100 years from now, producers of today will be the legendary musicians of that time. Until my prediction comes to light, enjoy some out of this world beats!

Adventure Club @ Ampersand: New Orleans SWAG

Hey everybody! It's me, Etan Wish! Last weekend was Wizard World in New Orleans (as well as my birthday weekend!). While in New Orleans, you want to check out the food, the people, the partying... oh the partying! I was checking out what was going on in town that weekend, and one event in particular kept coming up in my searching. Adventure Club. I couldn't have been happier as every time I supposed to experience this Canadian dubstep duo, I was out of town. So here we were, meeting together in the city where life tends to just, happen. And I was about to happen upon my first tiny taste of a deep south party.

By: Mixed Mag
By: Examiner
The concert was being held at a local club called Ampersand. The line outside the place was enormous, in two directions. I did have the chance to get in before the full crowd arrived. The club was not huge, but it did have space. Minus a beam off to the left of the stage, pretty much anywhere you stood on the main floor you could see the stage. There were VIP sections along the sides of the main room, and a small lounge off to back right of the bar. Not to mention the upstairs VIP section which overlooked the main floor. There was also a second room with another stage with a small outdoor smoking section. The second room felt much more relaxed with room to dance than the main floor, but that quickly changed the closer we got to Adventure Club's set.

Beverly Skillz By: Jam Base
Opening act was a dirty trap set by Beverly Skillz. With a name to match her energy and performance, Beverly destroyed the crowd track after track. People were literally "hoofing" (the art of barking, but yelling at the same time) between beats. The sound system was loud, but didn't pierce which was good because I come from all these small concert halls with crappy sound systems and live bands playing on them. The lights on stage were the only electrical visuals, along with gogo dancers on stage. There wasn't a moment of dullness in the crowd throughout Beverly's set. And then the beat dropped.

Crowd Energy By: Aaron Gershon
Hovering over the crowd was Christian Srigley saying what's up and ready to drop right into business. At this point the club was at what looked like maximum capacity. It was an amazing site to see the support for AC out here in LA. Every drop was epic, making the crowd jump, bounce, and dance as much as their space allowed for. The laser system was also turned on, and it lit the room up with so much more energy. The vibes were amazing, it felt like everyone was having an amazing time.

Straight Chilling By: Aaron Gershon

The crowd was mixed with ages and people of different walks, but everyone was there to get down. I had the opportunity to meet a whole bunch of really cool people from the area. The gloving there was pretty good too, but there were only a couple out at this event. I can't wait to go and experience the NOLA scene again, and again, and again.

The Z-Dar: 'In Time' Peace Treaty Remix Contest

Whatup denizens of the Internet. It's Z here and its contest time again. Beatport has a contest up in collaboration with Steve Aoki's DIM MAK Records and Peace Treaty for Peace Treaty's awesome song "In Time" that came out last July. Like clockwork, EDM artists/producers from all over the world started taking the stems they made available to bring a ton of remixes to the net for the contest and for everyone's enjoyment. Events like these are what keep the scene alive and fresh as you can get a lot of content out in a short time and you can really see what makes a musician shine with a good remix to contrast them from others. New faces to keep on the radar is also a great plus too with lots of originality and flare to bring to the table in the ever increasing fields of electronic music.

Today at EGP I feel I should give some airtime to the artists and their respected remixes that caught my eye for this contest. I took some time to head over to the Beatport contest page and listened to an ear numbing amount of remixes, picked out a bunch I liked the best that I feel deserve to win the contest. Keep in mind as with any other contest article that this is all my own opinion, I tried to do this with variety in mind so if anything you know that if you don't like any of the individuals up here you can figure that there's sure to be a bunch out there that you most definitely will like. Keep in mind these are in no specific order at all.

PEACETREATY - IN TIME - (WALI FINKBEINER REMIX) [LINK TO VOTE IN THE DESCRIPTION!!!] by Wali Finkbeiner

This first one up is an impressive Progressive House remix by Wali Finkbeiner. It's light and airy, one of those songs that just make you feel right with the intense highs. The production on this song is awesome as well and keeps the original feel intact while building on its original emotional content. (VOTE for Wali HERE)

PeaceTreaty-In Time(Kundo Remix) by KundO

This next one up is a dope Drumstep remix by Kundo. It screams catchy and its upbeat stylings are gonna make it a mainstay on my playlist for a while. One of my favorites for this contest in particular. (VOTE for KundO HERE)

PeaceTreaty - In Time ft. Anabel Englund (Exige Remix) ~ Vote on Beatport! by EŃ…ige

This one here is from the Australian native Exige. This one has that extra flair to it, keeping a more whimsical style of Electro House to the contest. It's good and my first listen from this artist. Definitely gonna check the back catalog on this one. (VOTE for Exige HERE)

PeaceTreaty feat. Anabel Englund - In Time (Kynaze Remix) by Kynaze

This one is an interesting one from Kynaze. Its very Electro House, but it has a bassier vibe and structured  like a Dubstep track. It's ear catching and I love it, the vocal effects are awesome and this song out of all I post here, this one is the party banger. (VOTE for Kynaze HERE)

Peacetreaty - In Time (Third Culture Remix) by Third Culture Official

This one is probably the most melodic entry on this article, this cool one up by Third Culture is an amazingly light and airy Progressive House that instantly caught my body in one of emotional overloads you get from a good progressive song. (VOTE for Third Culture HERE)

PeaceTreaty - In Time (Singularity Remix) by Singularity

This last one here is by none other than Singularity. It's a very trance-esque take on Dubstep, its nice with tight production that Singularity is known for. It's an excellent song to chill out to and probably my favorite of this list. (VOTE for Singularity HERE)

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

These next two I liked a lot but for whatever reason I feel like they didn't beat the rest in the limit I made for myself, so I decided to throw em up here at the end for honors sake. I really do enjoy them though so let this be a sort of shout out to the artists under here.

Volie Joight - REMIX! (Dubstep)
Josh Vega - REMIX! (House)

So that wraps it up this time for my entries on this current contest. If any of you have a Beatport account you can go out and vote on any of these tracks or any others you might find by using their respected Beatport links provided. Hopefully I showed someone something they really enjoy today, and upstarts should really look into these contests they are amazing for anyone looking to get their names out. The winner will be announced on December 11th 2012.

Z-Dar: AEPH

Whatsup everyone! It's Z once again, and today I'm sharing with you guys some sick music I've been tuning into for a while now. The London native artist goes by the name of Simone Vallecorsa or his stage name Aeph, and I know a lot of you may have been checking him out for years now since he's been going strong for more than 5 years. His intense bassed-the-hell-out style varies from amazingly uptempo neuro funk styled drum & bass to nicely represented dubstep. I literally listen to him for hours on end personally as his catchy style and forward momentum keep it a mainstay on a lot of my playlists, so today at EGP I decided to throw some tracks up with a few reviews for you all to enjoy.

AEPH - SAVAGE JACKSON (BT024) by Aeph

This first song I'm throwing up named "Savage Jackson" off the Bad Taste Recordings compilation album "Bad Taste Volume 5" is a way beyond sick cerebral bore of creepy upbeat D&B bliss. It's intense sound manipulation mixes really well with its vertigo inducing bass that branches off into highs that sound almost alien in origin. A pure party starting track that's sure to turn heads if you wanna drop it when they least expect it.

AEPH - NIGHTRIDER (BT022B) by Aeph

This next one up is called "Nightrider" and its a surprising and original styled entry to neuro funk. It has an ear catching high energy 80's styled intro that builds itself into one of the dirtiest drops that almost makes you believe that you got blasted off your feet. It retains an old school 80's synth feel throughout that really makes the song a fusion of old and new to make something so much better. It later goes off around 4:04 mark into a creeping heavy bass riff that gallops the song into such a driving feel that keep you going hard.

AEPH - HIGHWAY THIRTEEN (BRD010A) by Aeph

This one here is called "Highway Thirteen" and its got such an awesome cinematic feel that really matches the song, kind of what you would imagine would be playing on an intense dirty futuristic Quentin Tarantino movie if he were into this kinda music. It's a song built out of pure adrenaline with creepy atmospheric overtones that break into something memorable, the bass manipulation is top notch here and the highs drive the cinematic feel even more.

AEPH - HOEDOWN (BRD010B) by Aeph

This one "Hoedown" is probably one of the best examples I can give of neuro funk styled D&B. It's intricate as hell and a great party song with breakbeat styled drumming over the usual drum and bass flare. It's got fantastic highs that create a sense of amazement that give a nice dark, but light hearted feel over the bass that create its own rhythms in unison with each other. This is one of those songs you drop in the middle of a set to get everyone going again, a favorite of mine personally.

AEPH - HOLY CALL (BT012B) by Aeph

This last one up "Holy Call" is not for the faint of heart. Don't let its low key quiet minimal intro fool you it's a mind melting demonstration of the skills that Aeph possesses. It's got a lot of variation in structure without making it overwhelming by keeping the beat timing consistent. The way the bass is presented and layered is amazing, and the electro neuro style screams flavor. It's different in an interesting way, something to definitely check out.

Honestly, I can't wait to hear more coming out of Simone Vallecorsa, His already beastly style is something I can see growing into massive proportions. He's got a ton of releases out and I highly recommend getting them as these short previews don't do the total experience justice. Any US promoters should look into this if you wanna get some heads turning, specifically NY promoters cause I would love to be able to catch a show myself once he's around!

Big Dub Candy Mountain 2012 - Festival Overview with Zodd

Z here, and I'm just coming back from a long weekend out in Pennsylvania at Big Dub Candy Mountain that took place at Four Quarters Farm, the home of many awesome festivals such as Wicker-Man which I was at earlier this year. I had an amazing time and there was a great atmosphere of the whole place with positive people spreading knowledge and good times, and today at EGP I'm gonna share with you an overview of the community and the overall feel of this beautiful event.

The scenery was absolutely beautiful with a lush forest dotted with hills and creeks  with nicely done rock stacking that were breathtaking and clear water open for swimming. Every corner was filled with surprises to no end, there was a gigantic stone henge upon first coming in circling where the main stage was located which I thought was cool enough on its own with massive slabs of rock imbedded into the ground all pointing towards the show but upon closer inspection I saw every individual rock had some sort of charm dedicated to it weather it be a giant crystal geode hidden near it or some geometric tricket. It was a cool little easter egg waiting for whoever looked, and attention to detail like that is what really creates a soul of the place.

The set work was also impressively well done with a minimalist psy-trance-esque nylon set work that focused more on enhancing the natural beauty of the place rather than creating its own which was only pushed even farther being that the meteor shower was going on in the clearest of skies. it gave for a nice effect, and the psy-trance influence was more prominent on the second stage that was wooden platform raised a bit higher that the forest itself with tons of psychedelic artwork influenced from other tribal cultures. They also had geometric sculptures made of florescent painted metal and nylon hanging from trees making lots of well known structures, the life pattern constantly rotating being a predominant one followed some platonic solids and other interesting ones. I really had alot of fun just being in these places even when there were no sets going on, as they kept all their laser shows and lighting on the stages on all throughout the night for whoever wanted to hangout there, and that was awesome of them.

The staff and event goers there were by far the chillest collection of people I have ever had the privileged to hangout with as well. Never have I seen a more mutually intelligent, motivated, and talented crowd. Everyone was sharing lessons and experiences with each other, nobody was a shady character or out of place and the staff were all like minded and helpful as well. They even had a native American style sweat lodge meant for spiritual renewal with actual guides and collective harmonic chanting. I didn't get the chance to go in myself this time around, but it definitely caught my eye. Proving that they are kidding and they take this seriously which is beautiful of them.

The talents that showed up were some of the best light and fire artists I've seen hitup a festival, there were very few amatures and among the pros the ones that stood out were like elites. I saw poi chipsets that haven't even hit stores yet, amazing hoopers, and got introduced to a bunch of new dope gloving cocepts. This seems to be the trend at Four Quarters Farm since whenever I end up here people are passionate about this places and aside from whatever festival that goes on and brings whoever there are people that come to every event here regardless of what event it is. I saw alot of familiar faces and alot of new faces and honestly it was one of my favorite events this year.

The Z-Dar: Haywyre

Where to start?! What's up people Z here, and I'd like to share with you an artist that has had my ear for quite some time. Haywyre is the name, and if you hadn't been up on this increasingly popular artist then just let me enlighten you for a bit. Martin Vogt has a style that can only be called his own with a sick mix of electronica fused with dubstep, Hip-Hop styling, and classy Jazz breaks that come together nicely. He's definitely one of the more talented artists as he masters and produces all of his own stuff, and incorporates tons of live instruments in his recordings as well. He is definitely one to be on your radar and today at EGP we're gonna share and review some of my more favorite tracks by the experience known as Haywyre.

This first track is off his most recent album Infinite Which is available for free by the way via Bandcamp where you can find a lot more of his music, Its stylings give almost a nostalgic feel with a very video game-esque feel that comes together nicely with an ambient flow in the beginning crushing into one of the most liquidy smooth drops I've heard in a long time. Definitely a favorite by most who know the extended discography.

The Observer (Preview) by Haywyre

This next one is off the Encompassing EP which is available at Beatport. It has an almost dark grinded glitch hop feel with great highs that bring the song full swing into an emotional roller coaster. The real drums in the overall package give it a very evil Big Gigantic feel. This song is totally nuts in the best way possible and its one that I frequent a lot, and that's hard to do.

This hard little gem is off of his album The Voyage also available on BeatPort. It shows off his harder side with a Dubstep outing that boarders almost on mysticism. It definitely entrances with its sick breaks, and dramatic style. Another personal favorite I thought would be great to share.

Another one off of The Voyage, this track Atmospheric Evolution shows the intense versatility of Haywyre as it starts off with some smooth jazz, all instrument work done by Haywyre himself that prove his legitimate musicianship. It's one of those laid back tunes you play to get that fix of some harder Glitch Hop without getting too intense. Stuff like this really certify that he's got a lot more potential that I feel future releases will blow people out of the water.

Raw Crunch ft Jay Fresh by Haywyre

Rawest of the Raw, Raw Crunch, My FAVORITE track off Infinite, goes ridiculously hard with some of the chillest lightest glitched out intro and interludes that make an altogether full spectrum song. With one of the dopest funk influenced drops you can ever imagine with vicious velocity inducing highs that make anyone wanna dance. It's a killer for sure and there are even two versions of this song at your listening disposal. The second one features rap by none other than Jay Fresh It adds a lot of emotion to the overall package that was already a great track made even better. A god send for DJs that wanna mix some variation into their sets if they are already on the haywyre train.

As you can already tell Martin Vogt of Haywyre spares no punches in his race towards EDM glory. Keep your eyes and ears open for him, He's climbing in popularity as we speak and I for one look forward to seeing him at tons of events and festivals in the future. He has six releases available for download and purchase here at his website but I'll list some quick links for your ease.

Haywyre - Lotus (2009) (FREE!)
Haywyre - Of Mellows and Revalations (2010) (FREE!)
Haywyre - Dubsonic (2011) (FREE!)

Musically With It: Zedd's Beatport Remix Contest

Hey everyone, Z Here! I'm sure a lot you guys already know that Zedd and Beatport are throwing a remix contest for that catchy tune of a song Spectrum, and if you didn't then now you know why everyone and their mom has heard this particular song or one of its many remixes floating all over the EDM scene in the past couple of months. That isn't at all anywhere near a bad thing in my opinion this song is one of the most killer tracks out this year, and the plethora of amazing remixes that these artists new and old, established or grassroots, big or even small as hell keep this song and the entire scene fresh.

Never has one contest amazed me over and over, and I feel us at EGP need to give a certain spotlight to a few of these soon to be contenders in the EDM field. So I took the time myself to get over to the contest page and check a bunch of remixes out and pick out a few that really stood out to me as a couple of my favorites and who I think would win. Keep in mind that this is all my own opinion, I tried to do this with variety in mind so if anything you know that if you don't like any of the individuals up here you can figure that there's sure to be a bunch out there that you most definitely will like. The contest winner gets announced by August 14th, so in the meantime enjoy some tunes!

This first one up is one by none other than AaA, most don't know this man, the Laguna Beach native Erich Vickers, but he really knows how to make a presence for himself. He's fairly well known in EDM circles, and his remix of Spectrum goes hard with a higher tone on the overall package, an amazing spaced out glitch hop kinda feel which borders on funk and catchy new rythmns that fit in equally well with the originals tone in and out. This one is a personal favorite of mine which I know for a solid fact I'm gonna be bumping this for a while.

This second one I'm showing you here is by ILLECTRIX. He's another big name coming up from the UK.  Nick KJ has been producing for a couple years and has just started to come in circles that are getting his name out there. He's pulled together a banging electro house drumstep mix for the competition using what I think are precise drum kicks and some heavy wet bass sounds to make an altogether dope remix.

This banger of a third is by Foxsky. He's from Fremont, California. His version of this song is an INTENSE moombahcore track with syrupy slow melodic choruses bringing in an altogether complete package if you love that spanish sounding beat timings. Which I do. Bassssssss.

Now this Fourth one, is who I think will win, Now I could be wrong but lets see here. I'm sure you've all heard of Stratus and if not, You should play catch up quick cause the EDM world is moving on fast and furiously without you. This remix although just a dubstep mix of Spectrum, gets treated with Stratus signature flair with lots of intense novelty sounds into almost vertigo speed inducing tempo shifts backed with a classic composition just only there to remind you what genre you're actually listening to. It's a work of EDM art if you ask me.

[scratchy records] WOAH

Hey ya'll, it's Wish[Paus3]. Z was telling me about this contest, so I had to check it out. Here's my two cents about he contest. I checked out the top voted, the mixes were hot! But, I know how sometimes talent can be overshadowed, so I went dooooown the list of entries and votes. I checked out this one mix by Razihel, and I'm glad I did! He clearly has a following, but the votes are lacking. Sitting between songs that were listened to at 700 something and almost 3,000 hits, Razihel's mix is almost at 6,000. Busing out some dubstep on the track is appropriate and he does it right.

LISTEN HERE

[deep jazz dj voice] Back To Z

That wraps it up for my coverage for the contest. Hopefully I gave you all some insights into some directions to look for new music, sparked maybe a couple of ideas for upstart producers, or even showed you the new "favorite" song. Let me know what you think of the mixes in the comments below!

My First Festival: Camp Glow

There are music festivals happening all over the country and world, especially during the summer time. With Electrik Graffiti quickly growing on the East Coast, Mufasa and Koyote decided it was time to head south and introduce their styles down there. We took the opportunity to check out a local music festival in Virginia, called Camp Glow.

Silo-ffiti
This was my official first festival, complete with setting a tent, cooking in a bonfire, and sleeping amongst a few hundred people that I would get to know pretty well by the end of the weekend. All the attendants were supporting autism awareness, and they were donating with ticket price as well as with canned food. Being surrounded by thoughtful, friendly and colorful souls was one of the best parts of the weekend for me. It was awesome being able to walk around to just talk to people and see who they are. The grounds were pretty large. Essentially the property was a farm surrounded by woods. There were horses roaming the fields, random wood creatures peering out from the woods, tall grasses, plenty of earth and open space.... it felt millions of miles away from the suburbs of Long Island.

Setting Up Shop

Tractor Ride Anyone?
Meme Me
There was a full line up of DJs, ranging from VA locals like Jynx and Conduktor, to out of towners like Fattie Fatz and Unicron. It was awesome listening to the filthy sounds of the south, they give a whole new feeling to dubstep,  and don't even come close to touching the hardstyles of New York. Different areas different swag... it felt good and culturing. There were three stages to pick at any time. Main stage was in the largest field, there was a forest stage (in the forest [duh]), and another stage on the other side of the forest. All three were technically connected through a path in the woods, although the direct path was meant for staff and devoid festival goers.

Styling Hooping

Stage in the Woods

I Like that Stick
There were so many vendors on site too. It was awesome meeting everyone, shout out to Neon Black clothing, their stuff is on point! There was massaging with Giggle Box, fresh food and drinks, jewelry, glass blowing and so much more! Seeing everyone out doing their thing was great, so many people had so many skills. Electrik Graffiti also had the opportunity to set up shop right at the entrance to the woods and the forest stage. One tent served as a canopy leading to the woody path, and at night this canopy glowed brighter than anything in that field. It was almost like walking through a portal for festival goers, from music and open space into light and then in the darker woods emmiting differents tunes to dance and throw lights to.

Into the Fields

Mufasa and Koyote Repping with Dirty Dub
Yessssss Hand Massages

Gogo and Glover!

Gloving was awesome. Almost needless to say. Friday was my gloving day, and VA has some sick glovers. I was so happy to get an awesome reception down there, I can't wait to wave my hands around in the air with them again ;)

And then came Sunday morning. There had been thoughts among us of something going down, because on Saturday there was a guy walking around asking lots and lots of questions. Turns out he was undercover, and him being there warranted the state police to come in and break up the music festival. They rounded everyone up around 5am, some reportedly were dragged out of tents and some said they were even physically hurt by the officers. Once they had everyone together in one of the fields, they searched every tent with a drug sniffing dogs and of course manually. There were several arrests and narcotics found. There are two sides to every story, and this is one that is a continuing story. The owners of the property are not happy with the way they and the situation was treated.

You can reach the articles out on the situation HERE and HERE. To add to the story, I've taken a direct quote from one of the women that live in the house about the story that came out in the news: "It just makes me so mad. But no. That was real. We all saw it. They searched our house as well. Took all our computers and other sh*t from the house. Notice they don't show any of that. But they did bring us a copy of the warrant the next day and scratched a bunch of sh*t out that hadn't been [there] when they showed us. It was flawed and you can bet we're not backing down. Orry's mom already has a meeting with a GOOD lawyer. About everything that went down too. Not just the house. They broke so many rules." I also suggest reading into the comments below the articles as well.

Lesson of the day? Make sure all your legal obligations are covered as well as be prepared to deal with situations if they arrive. Everyone was extremely well behaved, having an amazing time and fun, until it got torn apart. It opened my eyes to festivals though and I'll tell you, I need more.
