Mario Party 4 - Post Review

Two weekends ago was the mark of what's was very well the biggest event here in New York City this year, and every party I've been to last, 'cept City Lights. Hell, I knew about it before even going to a rave. I actually got the inside scoop from the one and only Sam Froond (Urban Adventures), on Halloween 2011, as he showed me the video and pictures he took from Mario Party 3. He told me I had to be there, and that it was going to blow my mind. Sam was right, this party was thrown bigger than any party I've seen to this day, and it wasn't even done by bringing out the biggest banger DJs, it was done with love.

Corny right?! It's so true though. Imagine I have this map in front of me. Tight Crew would be up here, about 5-6 hour drive from us. It felt like they brought the ENTIRE coastal north east to a warehouse in Brooklyn. That the first thing I noticed at this event, I didn't know 3/4's of the people. While totally not a bad thing, the vibes change from laid-back to adventure. I found myself constantly asking where they were from, and if they said NY and I didn't know them, I felt totally silly. But it was amazing to see so many people coming from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut... and so on. They came out to party with their people and favorite promoters/producers.That's family, that's love.

The party was held at The Lab. Even though I've been hearing people complain about this place since December, I've seen some amazing parties go down here, and this one blew them all away with decorations. Oh my god. The moment you walked in was like color everywhere. And you walked in from the front gates, so your in the smoking area outside from the get-go. There was a giant mushroom bouncy castle, about four different vendors including Electrik Graffiti with their tents lighting up. In the back there was even a wacky-wild-flailing-inflatable-arm-tub-man.

Once you walked inside, now that was wild! They had the Mario World coin boxes everywhere, coins, Mario decals, projections, coins, ghosts, balloon fish, and a big balloon Mario (keg included).... deco was everywhere. The way the rooms were split up was pretty cool too. You had the main stage with the bar in the back (they had a shy guy flying around!), the smaller room to the side (where you use to walk in) with not only a DJ spinning, but Nintendos set up with games and bean bag chairs to lounge in, and of course, up stairs with more talent rocking out. So many people were dressed up! You had your ravers in raver gear, and tons of Mario related costumes. I saw Bowsers, Marios, Luigis, Boos, Peachs... Diddy Kong! Always a fun time when people are dressing up and contributing to the atmosphere.

Did I mention the volume of people there? The spot was alive with tons of energy, and people of all shapes and sizes and from all over... I think some people really wanted that to be like a festival. It would have been pretty interesting camping out with all these people, especially if it were at The Lab in Brooklyn... right. I mean there was full body painting going on, a guy on stilts, a drum circle (normal for any party That Guy is at!), tons of kandi and love going around and lots to do.

Sugar High!

This past weekend was perhaps one of the best events I have been to this year. Yea I said it. I said it not only because I love Tara, Sue and Sacha, but because this party had the most upbeat music, energetic vibes, and crazy amount of people that had only been to a few raves. In one word, this event was uberfantasticsome.

Sugar Rush, presented by Tara Tiger, Sasha Alexandra and Sue Sarcastic. Held at the same spot as Madworld, the 12 spot. It seems that party by party this spot gets cooler and cooler. The theme was sugar [duh], so there was a ton of color everywhere! They had a huge gumball machine with cup cakes on layered tiers. Talent that flew in from all over the states. DJs spinning their sets on the rooftop. Electrik Graffiti introducing a new banner signing and snow cones, as well as bringing in Defective Albino to draw Mooker Commissions (GET ONE). Dudes bbqing chicken. Fire Poi... glovers galore... not to mention some amazing visuals from Morgan Freeman and everyone's favorite living piece of art, Kevin Carpet.

When I first got there it was already 9pm, three hours into the party. The 12 spot is fairly large, and although there were about 400 people already in the house, it felt kinda spread out. I had never seen the DJs on the roof before, so I shot up there to see how it was going. Some people were dancing while the majority of people were partying and chilling. This presented the great opportunity to meet a ton of new people. What amazed me the most is how many people were there for their first rave, or even the ones that could count how many events they went to on one hand. These kids are basically the future of the scene here, and of course should all be welcomed with open arms and a kick ass light show.

And light shows were given. So many glovers had come out to this. If you stood on the balcony and looked out into the crowd, you'd see show after show, ten feet away from the next. Seeing so much color from up top was pretty awesome. Morgan had killer visuals too, my personal favorite being that of Biggie Stardust as the digital hostess. Awesomesauce and kudos! That adds so much to the vibes in the room, loved it.

By the time the clock hit 11, the whole building was shaking. This was the party to be at, even if you've never raved before, this is where you wanted to be. The music was all hard-style and happy hardcore. It was just.... happy pumped up music! There were a lot of local DJs performing sets, but there were a few out-of-towners that came to grace us with new twists to going hard on the 1s and 2s. One of which was the headliner of the night, Jimni Cricket. She was awesome on the main stage! I actually ran into her randomly on the rooftop and struck up a convo about music and traveling. She was so cool and down to earth, and really cute too! Check her out on Facebook (fan page literally) and Soundcloud.

Mad Weekend!!

This past weekend was completely unbelievably... mad. It all started on Friday as I made my way into Jersey in the early afternoon. From Jersey all day and night, and then back to the city to go down the rabbit hole in Brooklyn for Saturday night, I was basically in no-sleep non-stop mode. It was insane and well worth it. Here's what went down at Nightlight Neverland and MADworld.

The Jersey rave scene is kinda lacking is existent at all. The majority of ravers come to Brooklyn to rage, and they are dedicated to coming out to at least two events a month. There are groups that want to bring the Jersey scene to a new level, one where the parties get just as wild and crazy as the ones we have here in New York. One of these groups is Subground Promos. Constantly on the prowl to find spots that would accept parties with open arms, and grinding the pavement to promote, Subground is up and coming in Jersey. These was their second event (I believe) and it was held in a venue unlike any I've ever seen. It was a bar that was once a strip club. Low ceilings, checkered white and light brown tiles, a pool table, gumball machine, huge full bar, and a stripper pole; the spot was very interesting.

After the lights were in place, DJ's booth was set up, and Electrik Graffiti was all set up, people started to slowly make their way to the spot. It started off small, with about five locals at the bar and 10 glovers jamming to the music. As the night went on, more ravers came out, and so did more locals, about 300 people came in to party with us that night. It seemed that everyone was digging the music, but there were a bunch of technical problems that forced the music off a couple times. That's when I noticed the dudes (bros) at the bar. It was a weird mix of people, considered that it was a rave held in an open bar helped with that. I was extremely happy to hear Rockman spin again, that was a treat, as well as meet the boys from Triple Threat Productions. They are similar to 314 Media here in NY, and their work is amazing! Check them out and show them some love!

After driving home at 5am on no sleep and onto a full work day, I didn't know if I'd survive the next event at night. I've been waiting for MADworld to happen since D3b told me of it's conception. DJs from all over the country. Brand new Brooklyn spot. A rave by ravers for ravers. I was pumped and needed the be awake for this. As the night crept closer, I began to get more tired. This wasn't good...I would not let me body shut off on me for this. I got to the spot fairly quickly after getting off the Williamsburg Bridge. Not sure if I was at the right place, I walked inside and BA-BAM... I was in the right place. About 9,000 square feet, an enormous stage, second floor and roof the same size as the whole building, VIP area nicely secluded overlooking the dance floor, full bar... this spot is awesome! There were a bunch of people there already and once I got to shmoozing I was awake again with excitement. Only problem was my brain had become so cloudy I had the hardest time remembering names... no matter, time to do this!

This was D3bst3p's first party, and you can tell there was a lot of effort put into making her vision a reality. The deco was awesome. They lined the entire second floor with cut up sheets and trippy tapestries to hang from the balconies. The lighting was pretty good with a nice boost from Morgan Freeman working on the projectors.  With all the white walls, and sheets, he had a lot to play with, and was a big help in making the room come alive. With Electrik Graffiti in the house, you know there were tons of glovers, and a nice addition for this party was fire spinning (rooftop FTW)!

The music was AMAZING. The set-up was all sorts of jimmy-rigged, but it didn't really seem to matter. Haters gonna hate and everyone is going to dance. There was mixing off an ipad at one point, I heard an ipod came into play at another point... the fact of the matter is that there was hardly any technical issues, which is amazing considering the gear they had to set it all up. Huge kudos to you guys, seriously, I had such a blast with everyone's sets. And big shoot out to the dudes coming in and showing NY what they got! For all you glow freaks out there, a two-tiered gloving competition sponsored by Electrik Graffiti went down, beginners and advanced. This was new and worked out really well! Beginners tier was taken by Sammy, and Sick Noley took the title for advanced. Mad skills were being thrown down, it's insane to watch so many new glovers come on the scene and how quickly they are getting better. Keep practicing guys! I want to shake the west coast, killing it!

Once the night was over (at 7am), I got my well deserved 2 hours of sleep, and went to work the next day a zombie. It was well worth it. Thank you so much to Subground and D3bst3p for doing what you do, I can't wait until the next ones!!

Glover's Spotlight: Legion

What's good everyone! It's Paus3 and we're back on EGP for a brand new Glover's Spotlight! With me today is an amazing glover, good friend, and fellow raver, Carlos! Thanks for being with us today man!

[PAUS3] Let's start with a little bit about your gloving history, how did you originally get into gloving?
[Carlos] I originally started gloving when I saw my friend Tarry Diamonds give it a try at a rave called Ecstasy May of last year. So I've been gloving for technically 9 months but I started to get really into it during the summer of last year. At first I was discouraged to glove because I didn't know how to do anything, it literally took me two months to get down finger roles.


What's your favorite part about gloving?

My favorite part of giving a light show is when the person I have given the show to thanks me and appreciates the show. My most favorite moments is when someone all of a sudden cracks a smile because they love the show so much; those are the moments I live for in my gloving, not the bugging out facial expression, or the soul snatcher (when someone is so entranced by the show that once your done they don't react for several seconds) its that kiddish smile that makes a light show heartfelt to me.

Do you have a gloving name, and if so, how did it come to be?

My glover name is "Legion" basically just took the second half of my rave name Carlos Legion and made it into my glover name nothing really special. In order to tell you about the name it over laps with my raver persona and basically I gave myself the name; it comes from the Demon Legion or the Demons that make up the persona Legion, but I don't use it in a negative connotation I took it because in my life I'm influenced by a multitude of things different genres of music, styles, etc. So me being a mash up of all these things and wanting to leave a personal mark on them like they have on me I came out with the name Legion. It applies to my gloving as well since I've been influenced by a various amount of glovers.


How would you describe you gloving style?

My gloving style is very fluid it consist of liquid the majority of the time; only the few times when I do digiting or tuts does it become more rigid at first I use to dislike that but now I feel like it adds a unique personality to my gloving. My style has been very influenced by Two glovers Epic Kirby Glover and Ray Chyeah, I try to apply as much of Kirby's Liquid into my show and try to add in Ray's precision, digiting style and he got me to slow down my gloving to people could see the finger roles and the figures I would make.

What's more important, technique or flow?

Flow is more important to me than technique even though I feel like technique is a major part of gloving. Without your flow your technique may break down or things may seem inconsistent during your show. Plus when I first started I was told to work on my flow before developing my technique so I stick to the school of thought.   


Do you glove outside of raving?

No I do not glove outside the rave scene; the only time I do is for practice or while trying to learn a new technique from a friend.


Who are some of your favorite glovers?

That's a really long list: the entire OWL team love those guys, Ray Chyeah, Epic Kirby Glover, Greg Bandit, Kris Marchi, Mikey, Eddie "Spikey" Diorio; there are just too many because to me everyone brings their own uniqueness to their gloving even though some use the same technique they always morph it into their own version of it. Are some more experienced then others yea, but hey I was a beginner once too and I'm still learning new things so to pick any one specific glover is hard for me.

Tell us about the most epic light show you ever gave.

Hmm there have been a couple that were insanely epic for me, but one that comes to mind is a show I did at Cataclysm which if I'm not mistaken took place in October of last year, I gave a light show to five people it was my first time giving a light show to a group of that size, so I had to extend myself so all five people were able to enjoy the show it but a lot of strain on my arms n back but some how it worked out and all five loved it by the end; I'm pretty sure there have been way more epic ones than this one but its what comes to mind at the moment.


If you could go anywhere in the world and glove, where would you go?

Another long list lol: DefQon1, Qlimax, Burning Man, Electronic Daisy Festival; pretty much any large festival or show I have on my to do list to glove at.

What your ideal rave scene look like?

My ideal rave scene Good Vibes, Good People, Epically Amazing Music just an all around good time with close friends and new people who are open minded about how ravers conduct themselves and what the scene means to a raver.


What does it mean to you to be a raver?

Being a raver for me means spending time with people you love and care about at a party that is blasting EDM music; dancing the night away till the sun rises and your eyes hurt but you don't care cause you know you've had a goodnight. Even though it may feel like you do the same thing every weekend, live for those special moments of connection you have at a rave whether it be with a friend or a stranger; because it's those moments you hold onto forever and look back on when you ask yourself why do I keep doing this. Finally, being a raver to me is applying the saying "Carpe Diem" (Seize the Day) to everything I do in a raver or even how I conduct myself outside one. That's what being a raver is to me.

FINYL FANTASY 3 : The Battle For Soul Society

Last night marked the third installment in NYCRaver's Finyl Fantasy series: FINYL FANTASY 3 : The Battle For Soul Society by NYCR and FTSA. The location for this event was a beautiful nightclub located in the heart of Brooklyn that's been dubbed The Cage. Adding to the venue's bass packed surround system, NYCR was nice enough to bring in a wall of bass that did not disappoint. Party-goers could be found raging both upstairs and downstairs to some of the nastiest beats that your ears have come across from none other than the celebs of today's scene: Frankie Bones, DJ X-Dream, John Bas, DJ Atom C and so many others. This was my first party at The Cage but I've heard stories about this spot and it sounds like NYCR really got their act together and cleaned it up because there was ample space for dancing the night away. The basement area was almost completely opened up with a bar on the left for all your refreshment needs.

When asked what he thought of the party, Kevin Sarcastic was kind enough to reply with his thoughts, "The deco was great. You could tell 2k and the rest of NYCR put a lot of thought into this party in an attempt to top their last two successful Final Fantasy themed parties. The Eye Candy dancers looked delicious as always and the crowd that showed up were all generally friendly fun loving people. The coat check girls, however, are greedy as hell and wouldn't take your coat without a tip or return your coat without a tip (on top of the actual coat check charge). The security is the most heinous anti-PLUR wannabe cop squad in the scene. I watched them flip off party goers, stick their hands in kids pockets for no real reason and generally be overbearing buzz kills." The good always comes with the bad, and Kevin clearly shows that.  Here are what some more party goers had to say about the night:

I was personally blown away having shown up as early as 10PM and already seeing a crowd start to form in both areas of The Palace was a pleasant surprise. On the flip side, a mandatory coat check at $3 is never something you're thrilled to encounter, however, I'm sure everyone was glad they didn't have their bulky outerwear on to weigh them down. The dance floors were packed and upstairs had sexy caged dancers hanging from the ceiling. A glove-off and other lights show battles went down on stage as Paus3 had mentioned and the crowd was going wild. Individual glove light shows were also being thrown in every corner. I got to trade with a few of the other glovers and let's just say many faces were melted.
